There is no right answer, but there are a few facts that might help you understand everything you hear about the three leading satellite phone options.  Voice Quality …. Globalstar is the winner.  Globalstar’s operational   bandwidth is 9600 kbps, versus 2400 for Iridium and Inmarsat.  Better voice quality and a little bit better data throughput, although none of these phones is going to provide internet access.  (There is a third party device called The Optimizer which improves data performance from all three phones, and you will be able to do e-mail and access some web sites due to the data compression and acceleration provided by the Optimizer.

Most reliable …. Iridium wins out here, due primarily to the fact that they have a constellation of eighty satellites, while Globalstar has about one-third as many.  They both work well, but Iridium has slightly a higher call completion percentage (less wait to get signal and connect and less likelihood of dropped calls).  Inmarsat, however, ranks quite high on the reliability scale, and is the winner in the ability to hold a long duration call.  Iridium operates through a large Geostationary satellite 23,000 miles over the equator. As long as you have a clear view to the South, you’ll be able to connect smoothly, and since the satellite is not moving, as long as you stay in the same location, you should be able to maintain the connection.

Flying in to Canada for a remote fishing trip …… both Iridium and Globalstar work reliably, although the Iridium, which operates through polar orbiting satellites will work better as you get further North into the Arctic.  Inmarsat would not be our number one choice for this fishing trip, because if your view to the South (equator) gets restricted, you are out of luck. In the Arctic, the Inmarsat satellite is very low on the horizon and connectivity would be unreliable. Cruising the Caribbean, the IsatPhone is a good choice because it has a clear view to the South, and it will stay connected for long periods.

The winner in airtime cost is the Inmarsat IsatPhone where their 100 Unit (78 minute) prepaid voucher sells for $100. Globalstar wins the equipment price war, but they do not offer prepaid airtime, and their postpaid airtime runs $64.95 a month (and includes 100 minutes of airtime).  Iridium equipment and airtime is more expensive than Inmarsat and Globalstar.  Whether this higher cost is worth it really depends on where you plan to use your phone, and how important it is to gain that extra 20% in reliability.

It looks like Tropical Depression Four will remain a depression or possible a tropical storm as it works its way across the Atlantic towards the Bahamas and US East Coast. The current forecast has the storm dying out before it reaches the US Coast.  The birth of TD 4 is a timely reminder that all of us in the Southeast and Gulf States should go through our Emergency Check List and make sure we have everything we would need for 3-5 days without power or water. Here is a list of suggested items to have in your Emergency Kit.

  • Water, a gallon per person per day. Also, it is helpful to have some means of filtering/purifying water, in case you run out
  • Food, non-perishable (cans, protein bars- whatever won't go bad)
  • Battery-powered radio with extra batteries (or you can buy one of these)
  • NOAA weather radio with extra batteries (or, one of these will do the trick)
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Whistle and signal mirror to signal for help
  • Surgical masks for breathing contaminated air
  • Plastic sheeting for building temporary shelters
  • Duct tape
  • Garbage bags and moist wipes for personal sanitation
  • A good multitool with pliers in case you have to turn off utilities like gas
  • A can opener
  • Local maps
  • Cell phone with charger/extra battery, or even better – a satellite phone. Cell towers and switches use power. They have generators, but generators can run out of fuel. Satellite Phones run on batteries and the ground stations are located in other States not likely effected by the storm.
  • An extra supply of any prescription medications you may have
  • An analgesic such as Tylenol
  • Bedding such as sleeping bags
  • An extra change of clothes, including sturdy shoes
  • A waterproof means of starting a fire (waterproof matches, storm proof lighter, etc)

Would love to hear your suggestions about emergency food and other emergency items.

It's been a nice weekend. Seems like a good day to put down our cell phones, gather the family and enjoy a parade or fireworks as we remember what a great country we live in. Just like most of us, our country has flaws and imperfections, but the freedom that has been passed down to us is something to give thanks about every day. - SPS

Globalstar has made available a limited number of Refurbished Globalstar 1700's complete with an AC and DC charger in a handy nylon case.  While a lot of our customers rent a satellite phone for their annual trips to remote locations, many consider buying a phone, so they always have one available in case of the unexpected.  This is a good opportunity to get a phone, complete with the accessories you need.  With Globalstar's Galaxy 1200 plan at $780 per year, users have access to 1200 minutes of airtime to use at any time during the coming year.  Give us a call at 561-245-5203 for more information.

Hurricane Season starts next Thursday.  While we usually don’t see a lot of activity until August, we have already had our first named storm of the season last month, and the various hurricane centers and forecasters are predicting a higher than average season.  The official reports calls for 11 to 17 named storms, 5 to 9 hurricanes, and 2 to 4 major hurricanes.  What this all means is that anyone living in the Gulf, Florida or Southeast Coast needs to start keeping an ear to the weather reports, and making sure your emergency kit is stocked and ready. If you are thinking about adding a satellite phone or GPS tracker to your kit, give us a call at 561-245-5203 and we’ll walk you through your options.

We have a lot of customers who don’t want to stay “in touch” while they are away for a week of camping, fishing, climbing or hiking.  But they also have family at home who want to know that they are safe.  Their Option ….. Rent a Globalstar Spot GPS Tracker for $34 a week including full service.  That means they can program their Spot Service in advance to send Check-In Messages, or two other custom messages to up to ten e-mail or cellular addresses.  Then with one push of a button on the Spot twice a day, the recipients get an “Just Checking In – Everything is OK” message and a link to see your current location on a graphic map display.

Also included in the service, is GPS tracking, which places a “breadcrumb” on a shared personal web site, that friends and family can visit to see your current position and how far you have traveled.  And just in case you have an emergency, one push of the red SOS button alerts the folks at GOES down in Texas, and within minutes they will contact the authorities in your area and have help on the way.

Of course, if you are running a business and have to take part in daily phone calls, you will want to rent a satellite phone, but, if you just need to let them know you are OK, give some thought to renting a Globalstar Spot GPS. Give us a call at 561-245-5203 to learn more about Spot and get your reservation in place.
